We do what we say we’ll do. Honest communication and transparency are at the heart of every project.

With over 30 years in the industry, we bring knowledge and proven methods that clients can rely on.

Modern Thinking
We embrace new ideas, materials, and techniques to ensure our builds meet today’s standards and expectations.

Reliability
Consistency and accountability define how we operate – from first contact through to project completion.

OUR TEAM

  1. This is our core team, including key subcontractors, staff (permanent and casual) and tradespeople who are consistently involved in our projects.

  2. It does not include our extended network of trusted trade partners, such as our painters, GIB installers and our tiler, who we regularly collaborate with on each project. While not all are full time staff, they remain an important part of our wider team.

  3. We also work alongside a group of established, independent companies with whom we have built strong, long-term relationships over time. These partnerships allow us to maintain quality and reliability across all aspects of our work. They appear on our website as they have stood the test of time, delivering ongoing quality service to us and our clients. You can view a selection of our trusted suppliers via the logos featured at the bottom of our homepage!

That fact is, we view everyone we work with as part of one team, aligned in delivering a high standard of service to our clients and willing to compromise, understand and adapt easily.

OUR HISTORY

Two men reviewing kitchen remodel plans on a tablet and paper in a modern kitchen. Kitchen design, renovation project.

The Director, Irne Grobler, has 30 years experience in the building industry. As ex-owner of a group of building companies in South Africa for a period of for 21 years, and another 2 years contracting for the City Council of Illinois, Chicago, he moved to NZ, leaving a still active and thriving business behind (www.verticalartisans.com) in the hands of a newly appointed partner.

Irne has 10 years commercial and residential building experience in NZ, working on projects country wide. As a good businessman, it didn’t take long for him to establish himself in business in the NZ market, initially working on his arrival as a PM on the Auckland Convention Centre/NZICC, the largest commercial site in the country, in addition to various other residential and commercial projects.

Wanting to know it all, he furthered his construction career in NZ and has almost completed his Degree in Construction Management with his major as a QS. This degree offers extensive knowledge, not only on the legal, contractual and material specification fronts, but leaves him with costing experience on top of his 30 years of quoting and design experience completing high end designs for clients. This will be beneficial to your project too!

Irne has a natural talent for design and practicality and thinks outside the box. This degree gives him the edge on dealing with councils and other bodies in the industry, which he has been doing since the start of business in NZ. Except for his PM qualification, he also holds several other 1-2 year diplomas as a Business Manager and a Welding Inspector II, passing all his subjects with first class honours. He has extensive experience in the steel, concrete and timber industries, commercially, and in the residential fields.

Due to his extensive knowledge, Retro Construction Ltd can provide a wide variety of services that goes beyond the scope of just renovating and building on-site. This includes project management (small and large scale), accurate estimator costings and business knowledge. This has to date, established a well-managed and structured business for the benefit our current clients in the NZ market.

With the support of Angie, a very experienced Office Manager within the building and property industry, we make a strong team. We can offer our clients package deals by connecting with only the best architects, trades people and engineers in the field so you don’t have to deal with any of the building procedures. We understand processes and timelines and by applying good PM skills, we can minimise the time period it will take to complete any project.

We work closely with the City Councils, Site Safe and other bodies to accomplish our goals and set ambitious standards on our work. Our pricing structures, though market related, always go hand in hand with the required research to ensure we can offer our clients the best quality, correctly selected materials with a resolute person that does ongoing price checks and material searching. Our partners in business are also not only selected for best practice but chosen for reasonable pricing, benefiting our clients.

Quality work is important to us. For this reason, although this business in still growing, our ongoing goal will be to work only with a handful of projects at a time, enabling us to provide the high quality, friendly service we proud ourselves on. We do not mind walking the extra mile, believe effective communication is key and will make time to listen to our client’s needs and views.

Retro Construction will soon be registered with Master Builders, is a registered LBP Building Company and belongs to the Site Save initiative.

We are more than happy to provide references to call and/or take clients to similar projects we have done to view before having to commit to any work at your premises if preferred (Retro Construction will soon be registered with Master Builders, is a registered LBP Building Company, registered with NZIQS and belongs to the Site Save initiative). WHAT DOES RETRO MEAN TO US?

It’s more than a name, it’s our foundation.

Retro represents a time where quality mattered, where things were built to last. With 30+ years of experience behind us, we carry that same mindset into every project.

But we don’t live in the past – we bring a modern edge to everything we do.

Blending traditional experience with modern style, we create homes that feel timeless, yet current.
